Mattresses and Bedding

We spend about one-third of our life in bed, so it’s important to choose a quality mattress set that will give you the support you need. When you sleep, your body is compressed by gravity in a different way than when you stand. Without a mattress that can provide your body the proper support, damage can occur over time to your back and neck. The most common mattresses are innerspring mattresses, although there are other types on the market.

There are three parts to the traditional innerspring sleep system. The mattress core consists of the innersprings or coils. This core is surrounded by an upholstery layer, which provides cushion and encases the entire mattress. The foundation is the final component, typically a box spring.

As with upholstered furniture, the size and number of coils determines the comfort of your mattress. Regardless of whether you prefer a soft or a firm mattress, make sure it is of quality construction to ensure you get a peaceful and healthy night’s sleep.

A few tips for the care of your mattress:

  • Always use a firm base for your mattress. A weak base can lead to a sagging mattress.
  • Most manufacturers recommend regular rotation and flipping of the mattress and box spring to reduce the wear patterns that can develop over time. Rotate the mattress (180 degrees, so the head of the bed becomes the foot) every three months and flip the mattress (the top becomes the bottom) at least twice a year. Some manufacturers recommend to alternately turn and flip the mattress once every two weeks for the first three months and then twice per year after that.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner for regular cleaning. Vacuuming is the only recommended way to clean a mattress.
  • Use a good quality washable mattress pad to keep the mattress free from stains. If stained, use mild soap with cold water and rub lightly. Do not soak a mattress or foundation.
